Route Description:

Explore the woodland and take in the dramatic scenery in England’s highest mountain forest.

The WOW Trail - this stunning trail takes you through the different areas of the forest, explaining the story of England's only mountain forest. There are areas to relax and take in the woodland, areas with opportunities to see wildlife and several spectacular views including one across Bassenthwaite Lake to Skiddaw, which is breathtaking.

PLEASE NOTE, THE WOW TRAIL IS CURRENTLY CLOSED (FROM 20 APRIL 2026) DUE TO TREE FELLING AND EXTRACTION. WE APOLOGISE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE. THE REVELIN MOSS TRAIL REMAINS OPEN.

Revelin Moss Trail - starts from the Visitor's Centre before crossing into the south side of the forest. The route gives spectacular views of Grisedale Pike and travels along the stream through some beautiful woodland.

The optional extension is up Sanderson Gill adding an extra 1.5km to the route. Please note this is a rougher track and may not be suitable for all users. There are great views from the high point of this extension back down the valley and across to Skiddaw.

Recovery from the forest in case of an emergency:

It is very rare that there are any issues of breakdown with the Tramper. If something unforeseen does happen Forestry England are currently unable to recover members of the public. Should this happen, you need to have a person with you who is able to drive their own vehicle into the forest (escorted by a staff member of Forestry England) to recover you. If this is not possible or the incident requires it, the emergency services will be called (ambulance or mountain rescue) to recover you from the forest.
