Become A Tramper Hire Site

Our collaborations with our community and local and national charities and businesses.

Why Become A Hire Site

Why Become A Hire Site

Our aim is to make as many areas of the countryside as accessible as possible. Your venue could become a Tramper hire site if:

  • Your site has a suitable and an interesting network of paths that are safely accessible for a Tramper.

  • Your facilities such as parking, visitor centre and toilets are accessible.

  • You have secure storage and electrical charging facilities for the Tramper when it is not in use.

  • You have staff on site (ideally including weekends and holidays) who are able to spare the time to assist users and book the Trampers in and out.

If you think that your organisation’s location has potential to offer Tramper hire and you are interested in working with Outdoor Mobility, please contact us.

You can find out more about our current partnerships and overall work in our annual reports.

Partner Sites

Partner Sites

Partner sites enter a lease agreement with us, where we provide the Tramper to the site, to be used by Outdoor Mobility members.

We will start by carrying out an assessment of facilities and routes and provide you with a detailed written and illustrated report and a risk assessment.

If you decide to become a partner, Outdoor Mobility will:

  • Provide your site with a Tramper

  • Provide training for your staff

  • Insure the Tramper and the operation of the hire scheme

  • Co-ordinate the annual maintenance and repairs to the Tramper

  • Carry out inspections and checks to ensure that the hire scheme is operating properly

  • Operate the Tramper booking system and membership scheme

  • Publicise the Tramper hire available on your site to the public and members of Outdoor Mobility

Affiliated Sites

Affiliated Sites

We can provide support to sites that own their Tramper, under an affiliated site agreement. In this agreement the site has the responsibility for the vehicle, including insurance, repairs and maintenance.

We would begin by carrying out an assessment of the facilities and the route and provide a risk assessment.

We will then:

  • Provide training for your staff

  • Insure the operation of the hire scheme

  • Co-ordinate the annual maintenance and repairs to the Tramper

  • Carry out inspections and checks to ensure that the hire scheme is operating properly

  • Operate the Tramper booking system and membership scheme

  • Publicise the Tramper hire available on your site to the public and members of Outdoor Mobility

Managed Affiliated Sites

Managed Affiliated Sites

We also work with managed affiliated sites, where one partner has ownership and responsibility for the Tramper(s) whilst other partner(s) run the daily hire scheme on the site(s).

As with the other two types of partnerships, we would carry out an assessment of facilities and routes and provide a risk assessment before setting up an agreement.

Outdoor Mobility would operate as a third party in this arrangement and is responsible for:

  • Staff training

  • Insuring the operation of the scheme

  • Co-ordinating the maintenance and repairs to the Tramper(s)

  • Carry out inspections and checks to ensure that the hire scheme is operating properly

  • Operate the Tramper booking system and membership scheme

  • Publicise the Tramper hire available on your site to the public and members of Outdoor Mobility

  • Do I have to be ‘registered’ as disabled or have a Blue Badge?
No. You do not have to be ‘registered’ as disabled, or have a Blue Badge, or disclose anything relating to a disability to become a member and use the Tramper. The scheme is open to anyone who has difficulty walking, whether due to a temporary or permanent mobility impairment.
  • Can anyone with a disability use a Tramper?
The safety of our members and other visitors and staff at hire sites is very important to us. We have a couple of health related statements for you to confirm before you purchase your membership, that will determine if the Tramper scheme is suitable for you. Please read the statements through carefully, as they form part of your Terms and Conditions with us, before completing your membership purchase. The statements are: * I weigh no more than 159kg/25 stones. * I can read a vehicle number plate from a distance of 6 metres and have no significant visual impairment that would prevent me from reading safety signs, avoiding obstacles or other hazards. * I have enough upper body strength, upper limb mobility and hand dexterity to grip both Tramper handlebar grips securely and operate the twist grip. * I have sufficient learning abilities to understand information presented by the instructor, be able to operate and safely control the Tramper, identify and avoid hazards, and to react to changes in the surrounding environment. You are the best judge of your own ability. Unfortunately, for safety and insurance reasons not everyone will be able to join the scheme.
  • Is there an age-limit to becoming a member and using a Tramper?
Anyone aged 14 and over with permanent or temporary mobility difficulties can become a member and use a Tramper. Please note: If you are under 18, your parent or guardian must provide photo ID and accompany you for the Tramper training and each site visit.
  • Where can I use the Tramper?
Trampers can be used at our Outdoor Mobility partner hire-sites. Your membership also gives you access to Trampers provided by our partners, Countryside Mobility, in the South West. Please take a look at our Locations Pages for current Tramper hire sites. Our Trampers are available to use at the hire sites, on routes we have assessed safe and suitable for a Tramper. For your safety and insurance purposes we ask that you do not take the Tramper off the route.
  • Can I hire a Tramper for my holiday to use on my own routes?
Outdoor Mobility Trampers are available to hire only at the locations and routes we have specified here, on our website. We do not offer Trampers to be taken away for use elsewhere. We are sure that you will find an amazing place to enjoy among the locations we offer, and we are continually working to find you more places to access with a Tramper. Visit our Locations Pages.
  • What happens if I get lost or break down on a Tramper?
Sites listed on this website have been thoroughly checked by Outdoor Mobility to make sure they are safe for you to use with a Tramper. When you visit a site, you will be given a map showing which paths or areas of the site can be accessed with the Tramper and site staff will explain any areas that cannot be visited. The paths are also usually way-marked. When you take the Tramper out, staff will give you a phone number to call should you have any problems, so please take a mobile phone with you. Where the mobile signal is poor you will need a companion with you to assist, or go and get help should something happen. We ensure that each site has a system in place to deal with breakdowns or any other issues. This means that they can quickly get to you or get you back to where you started in the very unlikely instance that you have a problem.
  • What does the training include?
The Tramper training is designed to make sure you have the skills and confidence to safely operate the Tramper: Staff at the hire site will give you the training The training lasts approximately 5-10 minutes The staff member will demonstrate all the controls of the Tramper to you and make sure you are confident operating the Tramper Once you have had your training you can use the Tramper at any of our participating locations.
  • I have limited strength or control in one arm – can I use the Tramper?
You should have sufficient upper body strength, upper limb mobility and hand dexterity to grip both Tramper handlebar grips securely and operate the twist grip. The Tramper uses handlebars for steering and a single twist grip to start and stop. The Tramper has a switch, which allows you to choose which twist grip to use, left or right. The speed is controlled using a combination of a dial and a switch.
  • I have a two-week taster membership. How do I become an annual member?
After your two-week taster membership has lapsed, you can log on to your account in “Manage your membership” and subscribe to an annual membership for only £15.
  • My partner/friend and I would both like to use a Tramper at the same time. Can we book two?
Most of the Tramper locations in our network have only one Tramper available, while some have two. This is indicated on the booking calendar. The two Trampers need to be booked individually. This means that each person who intends to use the Tramper needs to be signed up as a member and to have booked a Tramper for themselves. You can see if two Trampers are available at the same time by checking the calendar date. If the date has two similar start times (for example 10.30am and 10.31am) both Trampers are available to book. If one or both times are crossed out, the Tramper or Trampers are already booked.
  • I forgot my password; how do log in to my account?
Don't worry, you can re-set your password. Click the Log In sign and then "Forgot Password?". Then, enter your email address and "Reset Password". You will be sent an email link to reset your password. Please check your junk or spam folder if you don't receive this email.
  • Can I hire a wheelchair or a regular mobility scooter from you?
No, we only offer all-terrain mobility scooters, Trampers, for use at specific outdoor locations on routes at those locations.
  • Can I book a Tramper for someone else who does not use a computer and does not have email?
Yes, you can support someone else in getting a membership and to book a Tramper if they do not use a computer or have an email address. Every membership requires an email address, but it does not have to be the personal email address of the member. The email is used as the member's unique username and we will send notifications about membership or upcoming bookings to it. You can use your own email address for the person you are supporting, as long as you are not already using the email address for your own or someone else's membership with us. Please make sure that you answer the health statements and enter the rest of the details (name, address, contact telephone number) as the person you are supporting. If there just isn't a suitable email address available, please get in touch with us, as we will be able to help with this.
