It's always wonderful when the Trampers can be a part of holiday adventures, and we were delighted to hear about Chris and Kirsty’s anniversary trip last summer, which was actually saved by Trampers!
Chris was led to Trampers and Outdoor Mobility after his mobility situation changed suddenly at the start of 2025. He had always been a keen walker and active rambler, with memberships to National Trust and English Heritage. Having met his wife, Kirsty, in Sedbergh in 2015, the couple had enjoyed an active lifestyle with much enjoyed walking holidays being a prominent feature. So much so, they had booked a HF Walking Holiday to celebrate their ten-year anniversary, with a fitting location – they were planning to stay at a house in Sedbergh, the place they met, from which they would explore on foot via a series of guided walks in the Lake District.
Unfortunately, six months before they were due to embark on the trip, Chris unexpectedly developed a problem with his hip. In his own words, ‘one minute I was OK, the next I could hardly walk at all’. This came as a devastating blow to both Chris and Kirsty and meant that their planned anniversary trip was in jeopardy.
Kirsty found herself searching online for mobility solutions, so their long-awaited trip may go ahead. She came across Outdoor Mobility and the Trampers and felt she had found the perfect solution!
All was not lost - Chris and Kirsty still stayed in Sedburgh as planned. Instead of taking part in the guided walks previously organised, they instead booked Trampers at various sites, including Wray Castle and the Himalayan Gardens and Sculpture Park. Their week was planned around where the Trampers were located and their holiday was saved! This came as such a relief to Chris – it meant that he could still get out into nature and Kirsty could still enjoy walks alongside him. Chris said the couple enjoyed ‘all the variety of things to see, the varied terrain, features and wildlife.’ The Trampers provided the perfect opportunity for the couple to enjoy their anniversary by getting out into the fresh air, visiting new places, and discovering places they wouldn’t have otherwise considered.
In Chris’ words, they had a ‘great week’ and he found that all the sites they visited were ‘very nice and welcoming’, staff were excellent and he was even provided with a rain cape and blankets for the more inclement weather days. Chris believes Outdoor Mobility is ‘a really great facility’ and ‘really doesn’t cost much’. He found the two-week Taster Membership to be ideal for the circumstances of his holiday. In his own words, the ‘whole experience’ of booking and experiencing the Trampers was ‘seamless and straightforward’ and he has plans to use the scheme again, with another visit to the Lakes.
Chris is keen to highlight the lack of stigma he felt in using the Trampers. He had feared he may feel self-conscious, but in fact he felt that ‘no one was looking at him’ or taking much notice. In fact, on occasion, the Tramper opened up friendly conversations with other visitors. Chris found the Trampers to be ‘comfortable and easy to operate’ and said he felt safe and secure on all of his visits. His advice to anyone considering the Trampers is that they ‘are worth trying, at least once’ and he would encourage others to have a try, as ‘you really don’t want to miss out!’
