We’re delighted to introduce one of our newer members, Margo, who joined the scheme back in March this year.
A very active person who loves the outdoors, Margo was an avid swimmer, hiker and runner. She loved to get into nature and even ran a sprint triathlon in late 2021. Sadly, Margo suffered a Covid infection at the start of 2022 which led to Long Covid and a host of health complications, including heart and lung issues and extreme fatigue. This meant that she was no longer able to pursue the active lifestyle she once enjoyed.
By January 2024, Margo found herself seeking ways to adapt to her new reality. She was craving the countryside and the hills, but her folding mobility scooter simply couldn’t handle off road terrain. She found herself Googling ‘off road mobility scooters’ which led to her discovery of Tramper vehicles and Outdoor Mobility.
Margo decided to book the Tramper at Langdale – she longed to see the Langdale Pikes, a favourite of hers since childhood. Her first visit to the Lakes since 2021, Margo was not disappointed! Following the route from Elterwater to Chesters café, Margo describes the route as simply ‘stunning’ and ‘one of the most beautiful routes in the world’. She was overjoyed to have discovered the Trampers and declared them as ‘truly life changing.’
After her first Tramper experience, Margo was hooked and already planning her next trip! Before she became unwell, Margo’s life had revolved around adventure and the Trampers had given her fresh air and freedom back. She relished the chance to get back into nature, visiting the places she loves with the people she loves. Before becoming unwell, Margo had planned to follow in her sister’s footsteps and complete the Wainwright’s challenge - to hike all 214 Wainwright fells in the Lake District. As this is no longer a possibility, Margo has decided to embark on a new challenge – she loves the idea of ‘Tramper bagging’. Rather than completing a collection of mountain summits, she intends to complete all of the Outdoor Mobility Tramper routes! The plan is to meet up with her sister for a variety of ‘mini breaks’ across the country – the highlight being the Tramper trips where Margo’s sister will accompany her on foot. We can’t wait to hear all about her adventures!
Margo is keen to highlight the need for mobility aids for those with chronic health issues, who may find it difficult to accept their changing mobility needs or who may fear the barrier of cost. Her advice to anyone considering the Trampers is ‘just do it!’ The affordability of the scheme makes it accessible and the opportunity to ‘break free’ can make such a huge difference to mental as well as physical health.
If you’d like to feature in one of our ‘Meet a Member’ profiles, we’d love to hear from you. Email your name and contact details to info@outdoormobility.org and we’ll be in touch!
